KONO! Monolit 3
ISO 3 N&B ultra-fine Expert
~15 €
The KONO! Monolit 3 is an orthochromatic ISO 3 B&W film from KONO!, made by Svema/Astrum (Ukraine). At ISO 3, only very intense light (direct sunlight, a powerful studio) allows use without a tripod. Orthochromatic — insensitive to red, handleable under red safelight illumination. Ultra-fine grain, very high contrast, a near-lith look.
Atouts
+ An orthochromatic ISO 3 film — unique on the world market
+ Ultra-fine grain — maximum resolution
+ Handleable under red safelight illumination in the darkroom
Limites
− ISO 3 — a tripod and very intense light are absolutely necessary
− Orthochromatic — very specific skin-tone and color rendering
− High price — a very specialized niche film
The Monolit 3 is one of the slowest films available in the world — ISO 3 places it outside conventional use entirely. It's a repurposed Soviet industrial surveillance film for creative photography. Orthochromatic like films from the first half of the 20th century, it bleaches skin and darkens blue skies — the aesthetic of silent-film-era photography.
