Designed for photojournalism and outdoor photography in variable or low light. Distinct from the consumer Ektachrome 400 line — the 400X was the professional, refrigerated-storage version.

The 400X (code EPL) was the professional version of the Ektachrome 400, launched after the initial consumer version. Its warm balance and saturated colors made it a favorite among photojournalists for reportage in changing natural light. The entire Ektachrome line was discontinued in 2012, before Kodak Alaris's Ektachrome 100 return in 2018 — the 400X itself was never relaunched.
