Ilford HP5 Plus 400 is Harman Technology's reference panchromatic ISO 400 B&W film — one of the most versatile films ever made. Exceptional exposure latitude, tolerating up to +4 stops of overexposure with no significant loss of detail. Exposable from ISO 200 to ISO 3200 depending on development, it adapts to virtually any lighting situation. Compatible with every B&W developer on the market.

Limites

− Less expressive grain than Kodak Tri-X for creative uses

− Less microcontrast than T-grain films (Delta, T-Max)

HP5 launched in 1976 and was reformulated as HP5 Plus in 1989, with a notable improvement in push tolerance. Its formula has stayed remarkably stable since — a sign of refinement rather than stagnation. The HP5 vs. Tri-X debate is as old as modern film photography: latitude and price for the HP5, expressive character and grain for the Tri-X. In practice, the difference on a final print is nearly imperceptible for most photographers.
