Ilford SFX 200

ISO 200 N&B fine intermediate
~10–12 €
A B&W film with extended near-infrared sensitivity (up to 740nm). Without a filter, it behaves like a standard, slightly contrasty B&W film. With a deep red or infrared filter, it produces the characteristic near-infrared effect: dramatic black skies, white foliage, glowing skin.
Atouts
+ Infrared effect without special development
+ Extraordinarily dramatic skies and clouds
+ Usable without a filter as a standard B&W film
+ Reasonable price
Limites
A filter is required for the infrared effect (3 to 5 stops of light loss)
A tripod is often needed with the filter
Results vary widely with lighting
SFX 200 was discontinued in 2003, then relaunched by Harman Technology in 2007 after numerous requests from the film community. Its sensitivity extends to 740nm — beyond human visibility (700nm) — which gives it that near-infrared look with the right filters.
