Fujifilm Neopan 1600
ISO 1600 specialty pronounced all levels
Discontinuée — expired stock
The go-to fast film for concerts, theater, and the stage. Its very distinctive grain — fine yet textured, with beautiful microcontrast — and deep blacks gave it an inimitable character. It performed beautifully pushed to 3200 or 6400 ISO with a dramatic, cinematic look. Sorely missed by stage photographers.
Atouts
+ Fine, distinctively textured grain at high speed
+ Deep blacks and rich contrast
+ Highly pushable (3200–6400) with a cinematic look
+ No real equivalent in grain character
Limites
− Grain very pronounced even at ISO 1600
− Not well suited to fine subjects in bright light
Neopan 1600 was often used pushed to 3200 or even 6400 ISO by concert photographers, giving it a very pronounced, dramatic grain. Its particular grain — described as 'fuzzy' or 'velvety' by those who used it — became a visual standard in live music photography of the 1990s-2000s.
